VR-6
With Mustang air box installed
I first installed the ABD G-flo kit into my 98 VR-6 Golf. I liked the added power but I wanted to sheild the air filter from heat. When sitting in traffic the car would get a little sluggish. My friend has a 98 Mustang Cobra and the stock filter in that car is a cone type filter housed in a nice rounded housing. It seemed about the right size to fit in place of the stock VW air box. I used the red bracket, K&N filter & large hose clamp supplied by ABD. You could certainly buy the filter and clamp and you would have to make some type of bracket to hold it all steady. Below are some photos showing the steps.
A few notes. The noise with this Mustang air box is the same as other open cone filters. It is loud under full throttle, especially between about 3800 and 5200 RPM. I have had no problems with water getting to the filter even in fast driving in heavy rain. The car has run consistant 14.9's at 93 mph with this air box and a Garrett .10 chip. This is at Moroso Motorsports Park in 95 degree weather. I have no problems outrunning SOHC 4.6L Mustangs, at least up to the 98's. I also made a few mods to the Mustang air box and that is explained below.
I bought these parts from a local Mustang speed shop.
I did not use the rubber cone on the left. I pulled the threaded studs from
the hard plastic mounting ring on the right. I also had to trim about 1/2
inch of the hard plastic ring to allow the filter to fit and secure the
whole air box. More on that below.
Here is the car with the stock
airbox removed. The Mass air flow meter is bolted to the ABD bracket. From
here I push the K&N filter's mounting shank through the back of the
Mustang Air box and used a hose clamp to attach it to the Mass Air Flow
Sensor.
Here I am using the ABD g-flo bracket to securely
mount the new airbox. Instead of the Mustang air filter I am using the one
supplied by ABD. It has a shank long enough to fit through the Mustang box
and attach to the Air Flow Meter. I then used the large hose clamp to attach
the filter to Air Flow meter. The only thing really holding the airbox is
the pressure from the back of the air filter pressed against the Mass Air
Flow. If you trim too much from the Mustang mounting ring then you may get
a loose fit. Also, that plastic is really hard, you will need a dremel or
some type of power tool to cut it.
Here is the finished installation.
It looks like a factory job. I trimmed away some of the Mustang air box
to enlarge the opening. and I cut off a mounting grommet that is used on
the Mustang but only got in the way here.

Here it is. Any Questions? e-mail me
